Salpingitis and Infertility

If you and your partner are not having any success in trying to have a baby, you are among the 10-15% of couples who face the same thing. There are many reasons why a couple may be infertile. Inflammation of the fallopian tube, also known as salpingitis, is one of them.

Salpingitis is a type of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This condition is one of a variety of infections that affect the reproductive organs. Such infections are often the result of sexually transmitted diseases. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are among the most common causes.

The infection may begin in one fallopian tube and be transmitted to the other. If the condition is not treated, serious and long-term complications can develop.

SYMPTOMS OF SALPINGITIS

There are a variety of symptoms associated with salpingitis; however, not every woman who has the condition will experience them. Common symptoms associated with salpingitis include:

- abdominal pain

- dull lower back pain

- fever

- foul-smelling vaginal discharge

- nausea

- painful ovulation or menstruation

- painful sex

- spotting between periods

- yellow vaginal discharge

- vomiting

Some women experience chronic salpingitis and have mild or no symptoms. When the condition is acute, it can come on suddenly with severe symptoms. It is important to have any symptoms checked by a doctor. Symptoms can disappear without treatment, giving you a false impression that the infection is no longer active. Long-term complications often develop when salpingitis is left untreated.

IMPACT ON FERTILITY

Early diagnosis and treatment of salpingitis will most likely not affect your ability to conceive and have a normal pregnancy. Delaying treatment or neglecting to have the infection treated can lead to infertility. Blockages, adhesions and scarring in the fallopian tube can prevent a healthy pregnancy.

If the obstructions created by the condition cannot be removed surgically, conception may need to be assisted with in vitro fertilization (IVF). Chawla Nursing Home offers a variety of IVF options for the woman who wants a baby and has problems with conception.
