Hypothyroidism and Infertility

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormones. When these hormones are low, it can affect fertility. Ovulation can be adversely impacted if the hormone levels interfere with the release of an egg. There may also be underlying causes that are contributing to infertility as well.

In women, it is important to check the levels of thyroid hormones and correct them if infertility is a problem. Usually when the hypothyroidism is brought under control, fertility can be restored. If the thyroid issue is treated and fertility is still an issue, other conditions impacting fertility are at work.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

If you experience a longer or shorter menstrual cycle or have heavier or lighter bleeding than normal, you may have a thyroid hormone imbalance. A longer or shorter window for bleeding than you usually have is another sign. Other common symptoms include:

- Dry skin and hair

- Fatigue

- Frequent and heavy menstrual cycles

- Forgetfulness

- Intolerance to cold

- Muscle soreness

- Weight gain

Low levels of progesterone could also cause early miscarriage. This is due to the inability of the fertilized egg to implant successfully on the uterine lining.

TREATMENT

Blood tests are required to confirm hypothyroidism. The levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) are checked. If you have a low level of thyroxine and high level of TSH, your thyroid is underactive.

Treatment for underactive thyroid is usually a synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine taken on a daily basis. The medication helps you feel better quickly. You may also begin to lose weight as your metabolism stabilizes. It will be important to monitor your TSH levels to ensure the medication is at the proper dosage.

Your menstrual cycle should become normalized once treatment starts. For most women who experience infertility as a result of hypothyroidism, treatment improves fertility and many conceive within six weeks to a year after treatment begins.
