Varicose Veins: Treatment laser surgery ( Endovenous laser ablation EVLA) at Chawla Nursing Home and Maternity Hospital Jalandhar.

Varicose veins are a common vascular condition that affects millions of people worldwide. These veins appear swollen, twisted, and often protrude from the skin's surface, typically occurring in the legs.

Causes: Varicose veins develop when the valves within the veins weaken or malfunction, leading to the improper flow of blood. Normally, these valves prevent blood from flowing backward, but when they fail, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to enlarge and become varicose. Several factors contribute to the development of varicose veins, including genetics, obesity, pregnancy, prolonged standing, and age.

Presentation of Patients: Individuals with varicose veins may experience various symptoms, including:

  1. Visible, swollen, and twisted veins, usually blue or purple in colour.
  2. Aching or heaviness in the legs, particularly after prolonged standing or sitting.
  3. Itching or burning sensation around the affected veins.
  4. Cramping or throbbing in the legs.
  5. Swelling, particularly around the ankles and feet.

Diagnosis: Diagnosing varicose veins typically involves a physical examination by a surgeon. They will visually inspect the affected areas and inquire about symptoms. Additionally, imaging tests such as ultrasound or Doppler scan may be performed to assess the blood flow in the veins and identify any underlying issues.

Role of Doppler Scan: Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique used to evaluate blood flow in the veins. It helps determine the extent of venous insufficiency, identify blood clots or blockages, and map out the affected veins. Doppler scan plays a crucial role in guiding treatment decisions and planning interventions for varicose veins.

Treatment for Varicose Veins depends on the severity of symptoms and the patient's overall health. Conservative measures such as lifestyle modifications, wearing compression stockings, and elevating the legs can help alleviate discomfort. However, for more severe cases, medical interventions may be necessary.

Role of Surgery: Traditional vein stripping surgery was once a common treatment for varicose veins, involving the removal of the affected veins through incisions. However, newer minimally invasive procedures, such as Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), have largely replaced vein stripping. These techniques use heat or laser energy to seal off the affected veins, allowing them to shrink and eventually disappear.

Role of Laser Surgery: Laser surgery, particularly EVLA, has emerged as a highly effective and less invasive alternative to traditional surgery for varicose veins. During the procedure, a laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein, delivering heat energy to seal it shut. Laser surgery offers several advantages, including faster recovery, minimal scarring, and lower risk of complications compared to traditional surgery.

Varicose veins are a common vascular condition that can cause discomfort and aesthetic concerns for affected individuals. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential for preventing complications and improving quality of life. With advancements in diagnostic techniques and treatment options, individuals with varicose veins have access to effective and minimally invasive interventions that can provide long-term relief and restore vein health.
