Hemorrhoids: Dr. Deepak Chawla, Laser and Piles Specialist in Jalandhar.

Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, afflict millions worldwide, causing discomfort and pain.Dr. Deepak Chawla, a renowned piles specialist in Jalandhar, offers comprehensive care for patients grappling with this condition.

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus. They can be internal, located inside the rectum, or external, found under the skin around the anus. These swollen veins can cause discomfort, pain, bleeding, and itching.

Grades of Hemorrhoids:

Hemorrhoids are graded based on their severity:

  1. Grade I: Hemorrhoids that bleed but do not prolapse.
  2. Grade II: Hemorrhoids that prolapse during straining but retract spontaneously.
  3. Grade III: Prolapsing hemorrhoids that require manual reduction.
  4. Grade IV: Irreducible prolapsed hemorrhoids.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids:

Patients with hemorrhoids may experience:

  • Rectal bleeding during bowel movements.
  • Itching or irritation in the anal region.
  • Pain or discomfort, especially during sitting.
  • Swelling or a lump near the anus.

Role of Rectal Examination and Proctoscopy: rectal examination and proctoscopy are done to diagnose hemorrhoids accurately. This helps to assess the location, size, and severity of hemorrhoids, guiding the treatment plan.

Role of High-Fiber Diet and Water Intake:

A high-fiber diet and adequate water intake play pivotal roles in managing hemorrhoids. Fiber softens stools, making them easier to pass, thus reducing strain during bowel movements. Increased water intake helps prevent constipation, a significant risk factor for hemorrhoids.

Management: the treatment of hemorrhoids depends on the grading of hemorrhoids, the intensity and frequency of symptoms. Grade 1 and early grade 2 are best managed using infrared coagulation, sclerotherapy or rubber band ligation

Role of Surgery:

In cases where conservative measures fail, surgical intervention may be necessary. Dr. Deepak Chawla offers various surgical options, including:

  • Excision Hemorrhoidectomy: Surgical removal of hemorrhoidal tissue, done for grade 2, grade 3and grade 4 hemorrhoids.
  • Doppler-Guided Hemorrhoidal Artery Ligation: Non-invasive procedure to locate and ligate the terminal branches of superior hemorrhoidal artery and cut off blood supply to hemorrhoids using a doppler probe.
  • Stapler Hemorrhoidopexy: Using a stapling device to remove  or excise the rectal mucosa as a ring above the hemorrhoidal cushion with stapler reanastomosis of the mucosa
  • Laser Surgery: Minimally invasive procedure using laser energy to shrink hemorrhoids.
